Overview

How to Record

You can operate Freecorder directly from your browser. Here are the available options:

• Click Record to start a recording.
• Click Stop to stop recording.
• Click Pause to pause and resume a recording.
• Click Play to see your recorded files.
• Click Settings to change where recorded files are placed, as well as the final file format. (See Settings).
• Click Convert to open Replay Converter (optional install).

When you start a recording, a visualization windows appears on your desktop. This shows you a picture of the recording activity:

This also lets you see if you're in a Pause state. You can move this window anywhere on your desktop, or just minimize it. Closing this window stops the current recording session.

Settings

Clicking Freecorder's Settings button makes the settings screen appear:

Please note: You cannot change settings while a recording session is active.

You can configure the following settings:

Audio Recording Configuration

Select Record from Freecorder Audio Driver to capture any sound that you hear playing from your PC.

Select Record from Freecorder Input Audio Driver to capture any audio inputs (like a microphone) to your PC. Some sound cards won't let you record from the microphone and the speakers at the same time, but you can do it with Freecorder!

Select Record from Windows Input Device to record from any standard Window sound card line. Selecting this option lets you choose a device (sound card), line and format. You can also amplify an input (such as a microphone) to get a stronger audio signal to record.

Output Format

Choose between Wave and MP3 formats, and select a quality for either option. The higher numbers are better quality, but also require more disk space.

Prompt for Filename

When you make a recording, it has to have a name. You can have Freecorder prompt for a name before recording, after recording, or have it name the recording automatically using an automatic time stamp with prefix.

Recording Destination Directory

You can choose where your saved recordings are stored. When you click the Play Files button, this directory appears.

Customizing the Toolbar

Not only is Freecorder a great free audio recorder, but it also makes for a better browser. On your toolbar you can include cool gadgets like a radio player, pop-up blocker, email notifier or weather forecaster, add a "select to search" feature, and more.

Here's how to enhance and customize your toolbar:

1. Click the Toolbar Options menu arrow:

3. Select Toolbar Options. The Toolbar Options screen appears:
   
   
   
   
4. Select the additional components to appear on your toolbar.
5. Next, click the Predefined Components tab. Here you can add or remove buttons or gadgets like the Radio Player:
   
   
   
   
6. Next, click the Useful Components tab:
   
   
   
   
7. Here you can add shortcuts to your favorite commonly-used applications.

How to Uninstall

Freecorder has two parts - an application part, and a browser toolbar part. To uninstall Freecorder entirely, you'll need to uninstall both parts separately. Here's how you uninstall:

1. Click Start, Settings, and go to Control Panel.
2. Locate the Add/Remove Programs or Uninstall Programs option.
3. You'll need to uninstall both the Freecorder Toolbar and Freecorder Toolbar Application entries, as you may see here:
   
   

You can also hide the Freecorder Toolbar by right clicking on your browser's toolbar area, and deselecting the Freecorder Toolbar entry.

To uninstall from Firefox:

1. Open the browser and select Tools from the menu.
2. Select Add-ons.
3. Select the Extensions tab.
4. Find your toolbar and select Uninstall.
   
   

Note: If you're reinstalling Freecorder, there's no need to uninstall first.

Problems with Windows Media Player 11

If you're playing audio from a Windows Media source and can't get a recording, here's what to check:

1. If the audio source is DRM Copy Protected, you won't be able to record it.
2. Make sure the Applian Audio Recorder Plug-in is selected and installed. Open Windows Media Player 11, and right click on the top area to open the menu. Go to Tools, Plug-Ins, and make sure the Applian Audio Recorder Plug-in is active, as shown here (this is for Windows Vista only):
   
   
   
   

 

Recording Troubleshooter

If you're having problems recording, try this:

• Try pressing Record before you play audio.
